Sometimes nerves can get trapped in areas in the body where it's narrow or where it exit the spine to supply the extremities. If the space where the nerve exit becomes more narrow, which can be due to some swelling, an injury, thickening of a tendon or even arthritis, it can cause symptoms like shooting pain, burning sensation, pins and needles, a feeling of change of temperature or numbness. In some cases where the nerve is being pinged Beverly or for a prolonged period of time, it can also cause some weakness.
Osteopathy uses specific techniques to "decompress" the area where the nerve has been compressed as well as other techniques to restore mobility, reduce inflammation and reduce muscle tension in the affected area. The osteopath will most likely also give some advice and exercises to help at home along side treatment to speed up recovery.
In some instance, some trapped nerves can be caused by a serious injury and would need either further investigations or medical attention. Osteopaths have the training to be able to pick up on those injuries and therefore refer you if judged necessary.
