Did you know that 8 out of 10 people suffer with back pain at some point in their lives? There are many reasons why people suffer with lower back pain. it could be due to a trapped nerve, muscle spasms, a disc injury, a imbalance in the muscles or pelvis, restrictions in the spine, poor posture or even Osteoarthritis.
Lower back pain presents in different forms, it can be acute, chronic, a dull ache, a sharp stabbing pain, stiffness or even a shooting burning pain. In most cases lower back pain can be aggravated by certain movement or position like sitting for prolonged period of time.
How can Osteopathy help?
It's important for the Osteopath to see and feel how the spine and surrounding joints are moving in order to diagnose lower back pain. It's also important to have an insight of a patient's lifestyle and hobbies to see if there are any factors that could have contributed to the complaint. This will also help the Osteopath to give you the best advice and exercises to do after a treatment.
Osteopathic techniques such as soft tissue work, articulation and even high velocity thrust techniques (HVT) can be used to treat lower back pain. Osteopaths use HVT techniques to gap a joint that is restricted in order to restore movement which produces a clicking sound. We don't use this technique on each patient and there are alternative techniques we can use if we think it's not appropriate or a patient is not comfortable with it.
Lower back pain is very common and we see those complaints every day in practice. The prognosis varies very much depending on the diagnosis, the patient age and the occupation and lifestyle of each patient. The diagnosis and management plan are fully discussed with each patient during the session.
