Frequently asked Questions

What to expect during an Osteopathic consultation

The first consultation lasts more or less 45 minutes. Prior to your appointment you will be asked general questions about your presenting complaint(s) and about your past medical history which is normally done via an online form. If you have any relevant X-rays, MRIs, scans, medical documentation or list of medications you have been/are taking please bring them with you.

In order to examine you properly, we might ask you to get undressed down to your underwear but it's not necessary and most of the time we would only ask you to take your t-shirt off or your trousers off depending on the real we are examining. If you feel uncomfortable doing so it's not a problem, just let us know. You can bring loose clothing with you (ideally a pair of shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms). We can also supply towels for your comfort.

The examination includes a few general movements and a series of testing in order to get a diagnosis. The diagnosis, treatment and management plans will then be fully discussed with you before proceeding to treatment. Please feel free to discuss any issues that may arise. After treatment, the osteopath will give you some advice and if necessary some exercises/stretches to do at home in between session.

No you don't have to. Depending on the area we want to examine or treat it's easier for us to see the skin to fully assess so we normally would ask you to remove your t-shirt and/or trousers and be in your underwear but it's not a necessity. We recommend you wear loose and comfortable clothing like leggings, shorts, joggings for instance. If you aren't comfortable to get undressed that's not a problem at all, let us know when you come in for your session. We can also provide towels for your comfort

Osteopathic treatment is not usually painful and most of the techniques that we use are gentle. Although if you are coming in for a very acute complaint or due to the nature of some conditions you might find that some techniques can be a little uncomfortable. Saying that we always take in consideration the age of the patient, the nature of the symptoms and we always ask for patient feedback to make sure you are comfortable.

As Osteopaths we do use techniques called "HVT" (high velocity thrust" which is the audible click that ou might have heard of. We use this technique to mobilise a joint either in the spine or peripheral joints in order to restore movement. We don't use this technique on every patient and we will always get your consent before doing this technique. If you would rather we don't use this technique, please discuss this with your osteopath, there are plenty of alternative techniques we can use instead.

Yes we have two parking spaces on site in the gravel car park. However unless you are struggling to find a parking space nearby, we encourage patients to park on the road which is free parking and generally easy to find a parking space and to leave the two parking spaces for patients that are pregnant, have a child/baby, very acute, elderly or with a disability.

Those two parking spaces are shared between the entire clinic and not just the osteopathic clinic.

Osteopaths are primary health care practitioners so you don't need a referral from your GP to book an an appointment with us. It's also important to note that during your consultation, the Osteopath might decide to refer you to your GP for further examinations.

All three are holistic alternative therapies aiming to improve patient's wellbeing, restore mobility and reduce pain in the long term. However the examination and treatment approach varies slightly

Physiotherapy aims to restore function and mobility when a patient has been affected by an illness, a disability or an injury making sure it doesn't have long term effects in the future. The patient is encouraged to plan and participate in their own care by following a discussed management plan with exercises

Osteopathy focuses more on the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal conditions. Same as physiotherapy, it involves hands on treatment with also some advice on other areas like sleep, nutrition and lifestyle. The principal of Osteopathy is that the body is a unit so the wellbeing of each person relied on the way the musculoskeletal system work with each other. Osteopathy focuses more on the body as a system compared to physiotherapy that focuses more on rehabilitations strategies.

Chiropractic therapy focuses on the musculoskeletal system same as osteopathy which means treatment also involves the muscles, bones, joints and ligaments of the body. Both Osteopaths and Chiropractors strongly believe that treatment of the musculoskeletal system promotes the ability for the body to heal it self and has an positive impact on the overall well-being of the patient. When it comes to treatment, chiropractic techniques are most associated with spinal manipulation when short and sharp thrust is applied to the spine in order to restore mobility in the joint to improve general movement.

We are registered with WPA, AXA and AVIVA and we can provide a full receipt of treatment to be given to your healthcare insurance company. Most other insurance company will also accept a full receipt which we can provide,  just check with your insurance company before booking your session.

We would love to be able to promise every patient we see that we can cure them and make them 100% pain free for the rest of their lives but unfortunately we don't have a magic wand.

Most of the complaints we see on a daily basis whether they are acute or chronic we can certainly help with. Some patients get 100% better after just one session, other patient get 50% better after a few treatments and some patients get benefit from treatment to not necessarily get better but to prevent their symptoms getting worse and still be able to enjoy life to the fullest. It al depends on the nature of the complaint, the age of the patient and the prognosis.

The diagnosis is fully discussed with each patient during their appointment as well as the prognosis, treatment and management plan.

If you are ensure whether or not we can help you, get in touch with us and we will do our very best to answer your questions without commitment to treatment.
